From the Province Of Saskatchewan, ‘If Only’ got together in 1983. Their only recording was on this CBC produced album. Vocalist Sharon Hills was born in England. She moved to Foam Lake, Saskatchewan in 1970. She first performed on Yorkton TV in 1971 at age 14 singing Snowbird. She joined the Bo Jackson group in 1973 at the age of 17. She married the leader of that band, Jack Hills, in 1977. In 1984 she recorded her own songs at Studio West with Sheldon Corbett and Brent Burlingham as the group ‘If Only’ and pitched the music to record labels. She formed the group Inkahoots in 2017 doing the club circuit until retiring with her husband in Victoria, BC under her married name Sharon Matheson.

Jackson Hawke was co-founded in 1974 by Tim Ryan and Bob Yeomans. The two had originally begun working together as professional musicians in 1963 and had earlier been managed by noted Canadian manager, promoter and record producer Bernie Finkelstein.
This is a band that was based in Toronto but were mostly from the Sault Ste. Marie area of Northern Ontario. To me they sounded a lot like Procol Harum. Great lead vocals by several of their players. They released two albums of good quality songs in 1976 and 77.

The Market only put out two stellar albums before its leader, Luke Gibson, decided to go solo. They were so far ahead of their time, being the first rock band to utilize the services of a full time Moog Synthesizer player, that being John Mills-Cockell who would soon go on to form Syrinx. Eugene Martynec was later hired to produce records for the fledgling True North Records label, producing all Bruce Cockburn albums in the 70s. Avenue Road was produced by Felix Pappalardi who’d just produced the second Cream album, Disraeli Gears. He formed Mountain with Leslie West and had a huge hit with David Rae’s song, Mississippi Queen. See, things are all connected!

I’ve played these guys before but want to focus on producer Don Law. Law was one of the more proficient producers in Nashville who, for some reason was hired to produce the Liverpool set. You can actually hear the Nashville sound through the psychedelic layer of this recording. But the most amazing fact about Don Law: he was the guy who recorded Robert Johnson! He was hired by Columbia Records (US) and produced Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Ray Price, Johnny Horton, Carl Smith, Lefty Frizzell, Flatt and Scruggs among others.

If you know me at all you’ll know that I have always loved this band – Canada’s first Canada first rocking blues band who were legendary. I even had them on my second to last Great North Wind show in 1999 (minus M Joe) and worked in the post office for a while with guitarist Michael McKenna. Here’s side 1 of Stink: their first album, recorded in England. First time I saw them was October ’68 (with Geddy Lee) at Massey Hall opening for the Fugs. They were spellblindingly amazing.

Nesbitt was a radio dj who began broadcasting in the 1940s at CHAD Radio. Joined CKFH Toronto in 1951, where he hosted programs including teen and music shows and later became involved in station management. Recorded music as well; his version of “A Pub with No Beer” reached the Canadian charts in 1958. When he was program director of CKFH (owned by Foster Hewitt), he changed the station’s format from middle of the road to power rock in 1967. He also hired John Donabie from an Oshawa radio station and gave him his first foothold in Canadian broadcasting

A very rare single sided 7” recording for the Honda Motorcycle Co. If you check out the Guess Who’s discography, you won’t find mention of this release. In the 1960s, the Honda Motor Corporation of Japan launched their light weight, four-stroke motorcycles in North America. In Canada they combined with Pepsi-Cola to launch a ‘Pepsi Win A Honda’ Contest. Prizes were hidden under the cork of the bottle caps. The band were just getting their second wind, recovering from the frozen days after their early success with Shakin’ All Over with Burton Cummings taking over the lead vocals from Chad Allen.

Evalyn Parry is the award winning daughter of David Parry, one of the members of the folk band Friends of Fiddler’s Green. He was an English-born Canadian singer and theatrical director who died in 1995. Evalyn’s brother, Richard Parry, performed with the bands Bell Orchestre and Arcade Fire. She’s been awarded for her works in both songwriting and theatre, having been given the Dora Mavor Moore Award (twice).

Charlena was the first pop song by a Canadian group to hit No. 1 on the country’s most respectable radio station, 1050 CHUM where it topped the chart for two weeks. It was recorded in the offices of Arc Records before they had their own studio. Claims George Semkiw (to Bill King): “That was a real coup because up till then, CHUM would not play Canadian records.”
With metal garbage pails lifted off the floor and stuffed with rags to stifle any sound the band started recording. There were no overdubs. Everything was laid down on a mono tape recorder. The process took a few hours, stopping each time there was any error or to move microphones. One take was ruined with a passing train roared behind the building. The band was so successful in the Toronto area that they were asked to open for the Rolling Stones on their first visit, in 1965.

He began his career in 1961, as a pianist and singer with several country music bands in Toronto. Taylor also made his first recordings in 1961, for the Audiomaster record label. The next year, Taylor's "At The High School Dance", a single for Amy-Mala Records, was a minor success. His next single, "I'll Remember", on the Barry label, was a No. 23 success for Toronto rock and roll radio station CHUM, and the singer decided to relocate to Detroit, Michigan, to further his career.

Quinchamali is Qechwa word meaning “Spread to the 4 winds”. A band with this name formed in Montreal in early 70s, and were asked to perform at the Mariposa Folk Fest in 1973, on Toronto’s Centre Island. The group of four men had Chilean, Swiss, Spanish and Russian-Jewish backgrounds. They played Andean music on traditional South American instruments. Quinchamalí is the name of a small village in northern Chile.

One of the first punk bands in Canada, they formed around 1975. They laid down a bunch of tracks, including The Screaming Fist (their first single) in 1977, most of it unreleased until the compilation album, A Taste of Honey was released in 1994 on CD. (They did record and release one album during their years of operation: 1983s Saturday Night / Sunday Morning which was recorded live at Larry’s Hideaway in Toronto.

"The Lumberjack," an international hit that sold over 1.5 million copies in 1965.
In 1956 Hal and his wife, Ginger Willis, were hired by Colonel Tom Parker to tour with Elvis Presley. At this time, Hal and Ginger were also rock and roll singers recording songs like "My Pink Cadillac" and "Bop a Dee Bop a Doo." Hal and Ginger, along with Hank Snow, were the only Canadian performers to tour with Elvis Presley. Hal and Ginger Willis were inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 2010.

This is a great young band built around singer-songwriter Peter Youngtree who has some pretty interesting takes on things which comes out in his songs. Dirt Party is a good example of what I mean.
