2.   Johnny Kidd & The Pirates: Shakin’ All Over
(Johnny Kidd / Gus Robinson)
Alan Freeman's History of Pop: Arcade Records ADE P 10
London UK
Johnny Kidd aka Frederick Heath: vocals
Alan Caddy: lead guitar
Brian Gregg: bass
Clem Cattini: drums
Joe Moretti: lead guitar
Produced by Walter Ridley, 1960
Recorded at Abbey Road, 13 May 1960

This is the original version of this song. The Pirates’ stage act was theatrical including wearing full pirate costumes (complete with Kidd wearing an eye-patch and wielding a cutlass) which echoed some of their Rock 'n' Roll contemporaries like Screaming Lord Sutch & the Savages and Nero and the Gladiators. Other bands did theatrics too, like Sam The Sham and The Pharaohs who dressed in inappropriate Egyptian outfits.  In a way, their approach possibly anticipated and inspired theatrical rockers of the 1970s such Alice Cooper and
David Bowie. Anyway, five years after Johnny Kidd’s rendition of the song, the Guess Who released it and it went to number 1. The Who and The Clash also used to cover it.

3.   Roy Payne: Grandpas and Kids
(Roy Payne)
Live on Great North Wind, March 16, 1992
Trout River NL
Roy Payne: guitar, vocals
Produced by Steve Fruitman, 1992
Recorded live on air at CIUT

Roy Absalom Payne
b. April 3, 1939 Trout River,  Newfoundland

"Hey, you just had my buddy Dick Nolan on your radio program. Any chance I could get on?"

That was a phone call I received from one of Canada's best singer-songwriters, Roy Payne. Thing is, you never know what you're gonna get with Roy. This show could have been a disaster but is wasn't. It was great. There's a thin line in there somewhere. Stevedore Steve Foote described Roy Payne like this: "A rusty pipe coming out of a rock, pouring the sweetest spring water." He just wrote Grandpas and Kids and this was his first public performance of it.

4.   Wilno Express: The Killaloe Kid (In The Kitchener Kitchen)
(Wilno Express)
Coming Down The Tracks: MCVA Productions WRC 258
Wilno / Killaloe ON
Clark Geuttel: mandolin
Barney McCafferey: piano, vocals
Ish Theilheimer: violin
Unknown: drummer
Produced by Alan Geuttel circa 1979
Recorded in Rockingham, ON

Down by the slow moving Bonnechere (river), where livin' begins! Recorded for their own label, Madawaska Valley Credit Union based out of Wilno (coz if you don't know you will know), The Wilno Express recorded two interesting albums in the early 1980s. They never broke up, instead their members died off until just one of them remains: Ish Theilheimer from Killaloe. And don't let the sound of that song fool you: these were really good musicians trying to sound rag-tag for this song. It might be Ish on the tuba. And Barney McCafferey is most likely on the piano instead of his accordion. And Clark Geuttel is on a mandolin instead of guitar. And I don't think the drummer was a real drummer. So it sounds perfect!

5.   Allen Erwin (The Calgary Kid): Tenderfoot’s Warning
(Allen Erwin)
The Tenderfoot's Warning: British Archives of Country Music - BACM-CD D 345

Nashville TN
Lee Arthur “Kid” King: drums
‘Skippy’ Edward Brooks: piano
Freddy Young: sax
Clifford McCray: upright bass
Produced by Ernie Young, 1953
Recorded at The Record Mart, Third Floor

Kid King’s Combo represents an important, though often overlooked, chapter in the story of American music, particularly in the transition from blues and R&B to the birth of rock and roll. King's Combo, the band known for recording the song "Banana Split," was a French rock and roll group led by American ex-pat, drummer Kid King. Kid King's Combo is remembered for their contributions to the rock and roll genre in France. "Banana Split" remains a significant part of their legacy and reflects the rock and roll style that was emerging in Europe during the late 1950s.

Mastered by Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, New York City

What was going on on the other side of the Lake (Ontario)? Neil Peart grew up in the Niagara region in the city of St. Catherines. He very quickly went from being a small town band to conquering the world of drumming, joining his idols on the world stage. His first band, The eternal Triangle were known for their memorable song “LSD Forever” which I find most interesting since another local band out of St. Catherines who called themselves the ‘Modbeats’ also had a song called ‘L.S.D.’ in their repertoire.

Glen Grotto: drums
Produced by Sandy Gardiner, 1967
Recorded by Ivan and Phil Bradley

Sound familiar? I played this song on the show just a few weeks ago, when the them was Children. This week it’s kids, to I put it forth again because of The Kidds who done it.

The original line-up consisted of young members of The British Modbeats's road crew, who Fraser Loveman, their vocalist, would refer to as kids. When they decided to form their own band, they called themselves The Kidds. The Kidds got toether circa spring 1965 and lasted until June 1969.

Producer, Sandy Gardiner, was an Ottawa journalist who was quoted on the front cover of Beatlemania With The Beatles, only released in Canada in November, 1963.

The group has played for two Canadian prime ministers, opened for Peter Appleyard and the
Climax Jazz Band, performed all over Simcoe County, Toronto, Hamilton and Huntsville, released five CDs and had a lot of fun. The group has been immortalized into the Simcoe County Archives.

12. Perth County Conspiracy: Listen To The Kids

Stratford ON
Cedric Smith: guitar, vocal
Richard Keelan: guitar, vocal
Michael Butler: bass
Terry Jones: guitar, vocal
George Taros: piano, vocal
Produced by John Williams and Perth Earth Ltd, 1970

One of the first Canadian folk bands to get a major label recording contract even though they claimed that They Didn’t Exist. Various members of the ‘collective’ wrote songs, sang songs and invented a new sense of harmony, blending seamlessly from one member to another. They put out two albums for Columbia and a few others independently in the 1970s.

The poem ‘Listen to the Kids’ was from a book called ‘Miracles’ edited by Richard Lewis, Simon & Shuster, 1966

Dave Higgs - guitar, backing vocals
Eddie The Mannequin: nothing
Produced by Ed Hollis, 1977
Recorded live
Mixed by Vic Maile and Ed Hollis

Primary active years 1975 – 81. Apparently, Eddie was actually a mannequin and didn’t do anything so he was eventually fired from the band and never replaced. Eddie in name only! But those kids were alright.

Kevin Dukes: guitar
Produced by Bill Szymczyk, 1983
Recorded by Jim Nipar at Santa Barbara Sound
Mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound NYC

From Walsh’s 6th solo album with Joe Vitale.

The lyrics are a personal commentary, critical of then-modern American culture against Walsh's older pinball and pool generation. The lyrics also reflect a satirical view on this, with lines such as: "I feel a little bit mixed up, maybe I'm obsolete".

Katzenjammer Kids was a cartoon. This Little known Niagara Falls band played mostly at The Park Hotel. A Katzenjammer means to have a hangover. It literally means caterwauling, or wailing cat sounds. Yo-oh Heave Ho!

Toronto
Greg Fitzpatrick: piano, vocals
Danny Taylor: drums
Bob Horne: organ
Hughie Leggat: bass, vocals
John Richardson: lead guitar
Produced by Mainstream Records, 1969

Nucleus began in the mid 1960s as a bubble gum pop band called The Lords of London, trying to connect with the British Invasion force unleashed by The Beatles. They had a charted hits with Cornflakes And Ice Cream, The Popcorn Man and Candy Rainbow. As they matured into rockers, they ditched the British thing and became Nucleus. This was their only album, recorded in Chicago for Mainstream Records but it died on the operating table. By 1970 the group was no more.

22. The Nazz: Lemming Song
(Todd Rundgren)
The Nazz: Atlantic Records SD 5001
Philadelphia PA
Todd Rundgren: lead guitar
Carson Van Osten: bass
Thom Mooney: drums
Robert Antoni: keys
Produced by Bill Traut, 1968

The first usage of the title “The Nazz” came from Richard ‘Lord’ Buckley’s monologue. The second may be the song “The Nazz Are Blue” by the Yardbirds, 1966. Then there’s Vincent Damon Furnier, otherwise known as Alice Cooper who fronted a Phoenix Arizona based band called ‘The Nazz’. They were told to  change their name since there was the Todd Rundrgren band called The Nazz from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, Frank Zappa originally signed Alice Cooper (The Band) to his Straight Records label around the time that Zappa released A Most Immaculately Hip Aristocrat by Lord Buckley – the Original Naz (with only one Z) orator. The Nazz released albums called ‘Nazz’, ‘Nazz Nazz’ and ‘Nazz III’. They got the name from the Yardbirds song.

In the original "The Naz" from the 1950s, Lord Buckley delivers a playful, tongue-in-cheek monologue that re-imagines the story of Jesus Christ in a modern, "hip" context, using slang, beatnik talk, and jazz-influenced rhythms.

So my question is: was there any cross pollination between the various Nazzes?

An entire album of great Leonard Cohen songs. Released in November 1986, Famous Blue Raincoat is a tribute to Leonard Cohen, with whom Warnes had toured as a backup singer in the 1970s. The idea for the album originated when Cohen assisted Warnes with the lyrics of "Song of Bernadette" while on tour in 1979. Warnes had suggested the album at Arista Records and later MCA Records with no luck. Still she persisted and it paid off in dividends. Certified Triple Platinum (300,000 sales) in Canada alone.

I was given this cassette by a shopkeeper in Arnprior Ontario.  I can still remember the first time I slipped it into the cassette player in my car coz my hair stood on end. The Wakami Wailers were Provincial Park rangers who trained up at Wakami Lake in Northern Ontario and started singing traditional logging songs around a campfire. They graduated and were sent out to work at various parks around Ontario but still managed to do special summer gigs and recorded three albums of traditional logging songs, mostly from the books of Edith Fowke. Mark Despault, who worked at Sandbanks PP near Picton also played with the Frere Brothers.

Interesting when you consider the long lasting effects these recordings had on avant guarde artists like Frank Zappa, George Harrison (Electronic Sounds), The Beatles (Revolution No. 9) and King Crimson (Moonchild); Brian Eno, Bjork, Wendy Carlos, Edgard Varese and John Cale amongst others.

The Market only put out two stellar albums before its leader, Luke Gibson, decided to go solo. They were so far ahead of their time, being the first rock band to utilize the services of a full time Moog Synthesizer player, that being John Mills-Cockell who would soon go on to form Syrinx. Eugene Martynec was later hired to produce records for the fledgling True North Records label, producing all Bruce Cockburn albums in the 70s. Avenue Road was produced by Felix Pappalardi who’d just produced the second Cream album, Disraeli Gears. He formed Mountain with Leslie West and had a huge hit with David Rae’s song, Mississippi Queen. See, things are all connected!

Nico (who went on to perform and record with the Velvet Underground) was known for her acting in Fellini’s La Doce Vita and was wooed by Andy Warholl to play a part in his 1966 film, Chelsea Girl. “these Days” was later used in the film The Royal Tenenbaums. Nico had this to say about the album:

“I still cannot listen to it, because everything I wanted for that record, they took it away. I asked for drums, they said no. I asked for more guitars, they said no. And I asked for simplicity, and they covered it in flutes! The first time I heard the album, I cried and it was all because of the flute.” The producer, Tom Wilson, would later work with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention.
